I think I’ve found my new favorite skincare product! It all started last fall. I happily observed that my acne breakouts had subsided, but in their place I spotted (pun intended) an abundance of tiny brown freckles. This wasn’t actually the first time I noticed these constellations on my nose, forehead, and cheeks. They have been accumulating on my face over the years; with each summer tan, another badge of honour. While some forms of freckles are hereditary, most are due to sun damage. I had heard that recent damage could be reversed by proper exfoliation. Well, it was worth a try. That’s when I picked up La Roche Posay’s Mela-D anti-dark spot concentrate serum and decided to give it a try. This serum uses Kojic and Glycolic acids to gently exfoliate the surface of the skin. I would go as far to say that the results of a (gentle) chemical exfoliant like this one outweigh those of a grainy physical exfoliant, with a lot less irritation. My sensitive skin certainly thinks so.

One of the first things I was happy to see is that this glass bottle is darkly tinted, helping to preserve the active chemicals in the serum. The little dropper also means no contaminating the product with the oils from your fingers. In other words, I would be able to get as much bang as possible for this buck. I noticed that the first new nights I applied it, this serum made my skin feel tingly- but not in an irritating kind of way. As my skin became accustomed to it, the feeling subsided. After about a week, I noticed that some of the more superficial spots had faded. Past that point, I didn’t see much of a difference on those that had been around a while. My lesson learned? Wear sunscreen every day! On the other hand, I noticed a great secondary result: my skin seemed to be less clogged, and therefore I saw a huge reduction in the amount of breakouts I usually get. If anything, I absolutely love this product for how smooth and clear it leaves my skin. I’ve been using it nightly for about 2 months now and it hasn’t let me down.

For those who want a little more: a great supplement to this regimen is La Roche-Posay’s Mela-D Bright. This is a daily skin brightening lotion that uses some of the same ingredients as the serum, to provide daily radiance. I liked that this produced contained vitamin C, an effective anti-oxidant. Word of caution to be careful not to confuse this tube with your toothpaste, while in a sleepy morning daze: the packaging is quite similar!
