Entertaining kids at a barbeque can be a difficult thing to do when they will be intrigued by the smoke emitting from the grill, the various kitchen implements and the excitement surrounding the whole event. Of course, you want to make sure children have fun at these adult-aimed parties, but when they try to ‘help’ with the cooking, things can become difficult safety-wise. However, helping with dessert can be a fun activity to keep them away from the flames to create tasty kid and adult friendly treats. By making some slight kitchen adjustments, you can avoid a total kid-astrophe. Have an adult to hand, use kitchen scissors as an alternative to sharp knives and of course, keep things fun, entertaining and delicious! A bowl of cooled melted chocolate will be a kid’s paradise, and even if there is more chocolate on their faces than the desserts, it’s all part of the fun. And of course that feeling of pride in helping with the desserts will make barbeques altogether more fun for the little ones, which is sure to earn you some brownie points with parents and kids alike!

Roasted Bananas with Chocolate

Get your kids to eat some fruit at a barbeque, with these tasty roasted bananas

These delicious roasted bananas are so simple to make and can be made without a lot of adult help. Try different types of chocolate and fruit to keep it interesting for kids and let their imaginations run wild.

Serves 2

You Will Need

1 banana

4 squares of milk or dark chocolate

2 squares of tin foil

Ask your little helper to carefully cut the peeled banana in the middle widthways with kitchen scissors, then each separate piece lengthways down the middle. Place two banana pieces on a square of tin foil and repeat with the other banana. Break the chocolate into four pieces and place two pieces in the middle of the split. Pinch the ends of the tin foil and roll up the top to resemble little parcels. Get an adult to carefully place the bananas in the barbeque embers and roast for 10 minutes or until the banana is soft and the chocolate gooey. Unwrap, place on a plate and eat with a fork.

Jazzy Marshmallow Sandwiches

Update the humble Smore with dark chocolate, sprinkles and colourful mallows

Marshmallow sandwiches, or smores in North America, are a campfire must and are often considered the king of all barbeque desserts. By letting the kids run wild with their decorations, you can create a fun pile of biscuits that are unique to each sandwich. For a different spin, try marbling white and dark chocolate together with a cocktail stick for a pretty effect, or dip in popping candy for a taste explosion!

Makes 5 sandwiches

4 squares of milk or dark chocolate

10 rich tea or digestive biscuits

An assortment of sprinkles, hundreds and thousands and edible glitters

A sheet of baking parchment

5 marshmallows

Ask your helper to break the chocolate into pieces and place in a microwavable bowl. Place in the microwave and melt the chocolate for 1-2 minutes, checking regularly to avoid burning. Ask an adult to remove the chocolate from the microwave and stir until smooth and pourable. Put down a sheet of baking parchment on a table then get the children to dip the biscuits in the chocolate and decorate with sprinkles and decorations, encouraging them to be creative! Once 5 biscuits have been decorated, place on the baking parchment and set aside for the chocolate to harden. Once the biscuits are set, thread the marshmallows onto skewers and allow older children to hold over the embers of the barbeque, turning regularly until toasted. Place the toasted marshmallow on top of a plain biscuit and ask the children to top with their decorated versions. Enjoy!
