Up until a few seasons ago, blazers and shirts were the attire for a day at the office and definitely wouldn’t have been considered as a fashionable item. Blazers came in an uninspiring array of grey and black (maybe brown, if you were lucky) and shirts had to be fitted and ironed to pass the test of appropriate daywear. Now, however,
these two items are the mark of every fashionista’s wardrobe and evolve with the colours and fits of catwalk fashion. Whether you’re at the front of the fashion pack or just fancy an update to your usual daywear, here are a few tips to show you how blazers and shirts can integrate into your summer wardrobe.
Unlike many trends, casual work-wear has found it’s pride of place in both the female and male markets.
Blazers for women are oversized and long; they’re supposed to look like an actual boy’s blazer, which is a bit too big on the girl, but of course the version’s that are available on the high street are fitted to sexy perfection with correct sleeve lengths and feminine collars and detail. The boyfriend look comes from the length mostly, so don’t fall into the trap of buying a blazer that is just baggy in all areas.
Blazers for men should be tight and fitted, not far off a tailored suit jacket. The difference is in the details like buttons, which should be ornate and decorative, and the lapels that can afford to be thinner and lower than normal suit jackets.
Blazers for boys are best in pastel colours like dusty pink and baby blue, but if you want to be a bit more daring, turquoise if the prime choice for this summer and will look great on everyone. Rolling up your blazer sleeves can help finish off the look. For girls, blazers for daytime look best in bright shades like emerald green and hot pink, and for the evening a satin black version is effortlessly gorgeous or a sequinned neutral-coloured one.
Shirts for girls follow similar rules to the blazers; over-sized but appropriately fitted in the arms and waist. Although solid colours will work wonderfully, a crisp white shirt will always look best. Team with skinny jeans and heels for sexy evening style.
Shirts for guys should be plain with no pockets or frills of any kind, and in bright, block colours like electric blue or emerald green. The shirt should be tightly fitted and ironed to perfection, and if you like to accessorise, a black skinny tie is all you need.
